Review
Detour is a film noir masterpiece, directed by Edgar G. Ulmer and released in 1945. The movie follows the story of Al Roberts, a talented piano player who dreams of making it big in Hollywood. However, when his girlfriend leaves him and he runs out of money, he decides to hitchhike from New York to California. This decision marks the beginning of a thrilling journey that leads him down a dangerous path.
The movie opens with Roberts sitting in front of a diner on Route 66, with his thumb outstretched, hoping to catch a lift to California. As luck would have it, a man named Charles Haskell Jr. pulls up in his convertible and offers him a ride. The two men strike up an uneasy conversation, but eventually Haskell reveals that he is leaving his wife behind and heading out west to start anew.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Haskell suffers a heart attack while driving through the desert and dies before they can reach the nearest hospital. Fearing the consequences of being caught with a dead body in his car, Roberts decides to assume Haskell’s identity and steal his money.
The rest of the movie follows Roberts as he navigates through one dangerous situation after another; from being threatened by crooked cops to falling for femme fatale Vera (Ann Savage), who blackmails him into helping her get revenge on her ex-boyfriend.
